Have you ever looked at Hebrew writing and wondered: "Could I ever learn to read these letters?" The answer is yes! Learning the Hebrew alphabet (Alef-Bet) is an essential step for anyone who wants to learn Hebrew online or in person.

At first, Hebrew letters may look completely different from English, but with the right guidance and practice, learning the Hebrew alphabet can become an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

In this beginner’s guide, you will learn what the Hebrew alphabet is, how Hebrew letters work, and how you can start reading Hebrew step by step.

What Is the Hebrew Alphabet?

The Hebrew alphabet, known as Alef-Bet (אָלֶף־בֵּית), is the writing system used for the Hebrew language. Unlike English, Hebrew is written from right to left.

The Hebrew alphabet has 22 letters, and their sound depends on the vowel. Unlike English, Hebrew does not have capital letters. However, it has five special final letters (אותיות סופיות) that appear only at the end of words.  Once you learn the Hebrew letters and their sounds, you can begin reading Hebrew words.

Hebrew Vowels (Nikud): How Do You Know the Sound?

One of the first questions beginners ask is:

"How do I know how to pronounce Hebrew letters?"

The answer is: Hebrew vowels, called Nikud (ניקוד).

Hebrew has five vowel sounds:

  • A

  • E

  • I

  • O

  • U

These vowel signs appear around the letters- underneath, above or next to them.

For example:

שָׁלוֹם Shalom

The interesting thing is that modern Hebrew is written without vowels. Therefore, you will not usually see Nikud in Israeli newspapers, adult books, or street signs.

Native Hebrew speakers know how to read without vowels because they already understand the language.

Beginners, however, learn with Nikud because it makes pronunciation much easier.

Think of Nikud like training wheels on a bicycle- it helps you learn, and later you can read without it.

Why Learn the Hebrew Alphabet?

Learning Hebrew letters gives you a strong foundation for learning the entire language.

When you can read Hebrew, you can:

✓ Understand Hebrew words in songs and prayers ✓ Read signs when visiting Israel ✓ Improve your Hebrew pronunciation ✓ Recognise new words more easily ✓ Build confidence as a beginner Hebrew learner

Hebrew also has a unique structure. Many words are built from roots (שורשים)- groups of letters that connect related words.

For example:

ספר (Sefer) – book ספרייה (Sifriya) – library

Both words share the root:

ספר

Understanding roots helps you recognise the connections between Hebrew words. In my lessons, I explain to students how to recognise the root of a word and even how to understand new words they encounter for the first time.

Is the Hebrew Alphabet Difficult to Learn?

Many beginners think Hebrew letters are difficult because they look unfamiliar, but the Hebrew alphabet is an organised system. With regular practice and clear explanations, beginners can start recognising Hebrew letters and reading simple words step by step.
